First Brand MC760L Cello — 1/4 Size | Complete Beginner to Intermediate Outfit
The First Brand MC760L is a purpose-built 1/4 size cello designed for young students and early-stage learners who need a reliable, acoustically consistent instrument without the fragility or cost of a hand-carved professional model. Supplied as a complete outfit with bow, rosin, and soft case, the MC760L removes every barrier to getting started.
Tonewoods & Acoustic Construction
The MC760L uses a laminated spruce top (table) — a multi-ply construction that bonds thin spruce veneers under heat and pressure. Compared to solid spruce, laminated tops offer superior resistance to humidity-induced cracking, making them ideal for the Indian climate and for instruments that will be transported frequently. The laminated maple back and sides provide the characteristic bright, projecting tone associated with maple, while the multi-ply structure adds structural rigidity to the rib assembly.
- Top (Table): Laminated Spruce — humidity-resistant, consistent acoustic response
- Back & Sides: Laminated Maple — bright tonal projection, structural rigidity
- Purfling: Painted purfling channel — decorative edge detailing
- Fittings: Rosewood pegs, tailpiece, and endpin components
Size & Scale — Understanding 1/4 Cello
A 1/4 size cello is intended for students approximately 5–7 years of age or with an arm length of roughly 44–47 cm (wrist to neck). The reduced scale length lowers left-hand stretch requirements and brings the instrument into correct ergonomic proportion for smaller players. The MC760L's body length, string length, and neck profile are all scaled accordingly, ensuring proper bow technique development from the outset.
- Recommended Age: Approx. 5–7 years
- Arm Length Guide: 44–47 cm (wrist to base of neck)
- Size Designation: 1/4 (quarter size)
- Tuning: Standard CGDA (low to high)
Neck, Fingerboard & Setup
The neck is shaped to a student-friendly profile and fitted with a rosewood fingerboard. Rosewood provides a smooth playing surface with natural oils that resist wear from finger contact. The nut and saddle are pre-set at the factory for playable action, reducing the need for immediate luthier adjustment. The rosewood tailpiece anchors the strings and is fitted with a fine-tuner-compatible design, allowing precise pitch adjustment — critical for young students still developing their ear.
What's Included in the Outfit
The MC760L ships as a complete ready-to-play outfit, eliminating the need to source accessories separately:
- Cello Bow: Matched 1/4 size bow — correctly weighted and balanced for the instrument
- Rosin: Cello rosin cake — applied to bow hair to generate the friction needed for tone production
- Soft Case: Padded soft case with carry handles — protects the instrument during transport and storage
Why Laminated Construction for a Student Instrument?
Solid-wood cellos, while acoustically superior at the professional level, are highly sensitive to temperature and humidity fluctuations. In India's variable climate — from humid coastal regions to dry northern winters — a solid-top instrument in the hands of a young student is at significant risk of top cracks and seam separations. Laminated construction mitigates this risk entirely, making the MC760L a practical, durable choice for school programmes, music academies, and home practice environments.
